DECEMBER 2007

King Unique
‘Yohkoh’ (CURFEW)
A year off from studio productions to travel the world, and now this. Listen up, we say everyone should do that same thing if this is the result…simplicity, clarity, inspirational, so fresh and so, SO good. A defining piece of music that will engage and delight anyone who hears this. The remixes courtesy of Luke Dzierzek and James Talk might well be very good but nothing will get us away from this amazing Original Mix.

Slytek
‘Spinout’ (STANDBY)
Hotly anticipated next installment from Slytek following widespread support for previous releases Body Heat and Calyx across the summer. Yet another big room shaker here with the Original Mix displaying a fine balance of club arrangement and uplifting feel-good melodies. The Hot Flush and Neon Skin Mixes provide slick variations with slightly more minimal and deeper vibes which will appeal to more underground tastes. Pure class.

Guy J
‘Save Me’ / ‘Night Loss’ (BEDROCK)
Quite honestly ‘Save Me’ is one of the biggest anthems from Bedrock for quite some time, reminding us of the depth of quality to emerge from this label over the last decade. As often is the case, it’s such a simple track without any obvious distinguishing features, but with the magic ability to totally rock any dancefloor early, peak or late. Flip to ‘Night Loss’ for a more minimal frenzy of a club track that’s almost as good.
M8/M8 (Standby)

Ping Pong Boys
‘Red Rubber’ (WHOOP!)
The Original mix is an interesting fusion of house and trance productions which comes together rather nicely thanks to a solid bass line is complimented by some really prominent fat synths, giving the track its more trancey flavour. The Paul Thomas remix takes a very different direction, focusing on the use of melodic keys to create a progressive and altogether more uplifting mix.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Soul Mekanik
‘Robots 3’ (RIP RECORDS)
A welcome return from RIP records with this, the latest release from Soul Mekanik. Deep melodic grooves are the dominant feature of the Tarrentella remix, but head straight for the Spooky remix if like us you are after something with a bit more punch. A great mix of a pumping bassline with techno influenced effects blended nicely with the use of electro stabs and vocodered vocals. One likely to be used by everyone from Slam to Sasha.

SEPTEMBER 2007

Stel
‘Infinity’ / ‘Heart Full Of Napalm’ (HOPE)
Stel (one half of Group Therapy) as well as serious boffin in his own right, delivers two strong slabs of emotionally driven house music. ‘Infinity’ leans towards the intelligent trancier end of things and is the gem of this package. It has long been a staple of Hernan Cattaneo's and Nick Warren's sets which should give you the ultimate indication of quality. ‘Heart full of Napalm’ funks along in a swoosh of stabs and tension building moments until finally letting go in a big flurry of strings. Cracking stuff.
M8/M8 (Standby)

Etiket
‘Bloody’ / ‘Milky’ (NEWBORN)
Sat on the fence that divides progressive and techno and a unique release with impressive creativity - while there is an amazing range of great music around at the moment it’s the more original tracks that we are favouring. Kicking off with the darker side of the release ‘Bloody’ has some fat electro sounds and an evil vibe but it all sounds rather good when put together and cranked up to high volume. Don’t be put off if this is not to your taste though as there is something more friendly sounding on the flip side forming a good contrast to this. ‘Milky’ is the more techy of the two but with its warm melodic break and fresh appeal it’s an irresistible track that we are sure DJ’s and clubbers alike will embrace.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Santos
‘Somatique’ (HELL YEAH)
Santos is an artist that always delivers high quality productions, often in many different genres from breaks to acid and minimal. This latest offering is a real serious peak time slice no messing about here. The Original starts with a simple pounding bassline over which is laid the electro riff, both of which have constant presence throughout the track. A few additional percussive fills aside, that really it. Nothing to elaborate, but will certainly work on the darker floors. The remix from Maskio is similar in structure but instead of an electro riff has a more tribal drum pattern which helps to create a warmer more infectious result.
M6/M8 (Standby)

Cass
‘Don’t See Me’ (SALACIOUS)
Cass is a unique within modern dance music being arguably one of the most talented producers out there, a DJ’s favourite and a truly underground ambassador. It is always a pleasure to open the post to find a Cass CD inside and he features normally as a co-producer (with the likes of Slide & Mangan) but here is one of his solo releases as 100% Cass. Salacious have done well to provide a cracking set of mixes (6 in total) but we’ll focus on our favourite titled D Dub. A warm progressive bassline is encased with layers of percussion and an incredible techy sounding riff that creates a real classic build. Definitely an old school feel to the structure (think of Sasha’s Xpander with its builds and peaks etc), with a vocal sounding very similar to New Order’s Bernard Sumner. This goes straight to the front of our CD wallet.
M8/M8 (Standby)

Alex K
‘Made to Messenger’ (MEDIA SERVICES)
A cute track this from Alex K with a couple of useful mixes that have real character. Adriano Dodici’s remix is our choice, with it’s deep soft progressive quirks and melodic acid-electro movement – an amazing warm up track. The Deep Mix is the housier track and is more reliant on some bright percussive shuffles and drum fills to keep things plodding along nicely, while a brief vocal also adds another dimension. A release on the deeper, more subtle end of progressive, and we can highly recommend checking out the Adriano Dodici mix if you like classy productions.

Futurestep
‘Axial’ (SINSATION)
Feelgood prog-house anthem here that will get those hands pumping in the air thanks to an old-school house musical influence that takes you a step back, but with a fresh sounding production that takes you a step forward. The Original mix is truly a track that you could play amongst just about any genre so very versatile and one of those secret tracks that loads of top DJ’s are likely to play without it ever really becoming huge (so go buy a copy!). The Don Stone Remix is the darker more progressive offering and although simple in structure it has all the necessary club tricks to deliver this record well to a more discerning crowd. A very strong release.

Buenos Aires Deep
‘Harmony’ / ‘Insolation’ (MESTIZA)
A new label for us even though this Argentinian label is up to its 6 th release already and we thought we had better bring this one to everyone’s attention this month as among the great variation of sounds around recently here’s one of the finest ‘real progressive’ tracks we have heard for a while. Genuine head-nodding plodding rhythms and besides being one of our top records at the moment, it has also picked up early DJ support from the likes of Hernan Cattaneo and V-Sag so take notice. ‘Harmony’ is the one we are going for right now with an electrifying atmosphere, commanding bassline and an arrangement that keeps you captivated throughout.

AUGUST 2007

Pauk Kwitek
‘ Lublin ’ (EXISTENCE)
Awesome release here from a label that is so hot right now. Percussive-led techy prog at its best with Original Mix and Purple Mix covering just about everything you could ever wish for. In Original form it’s a housey affair but with an array of synth stabs and grunts that occasionally jump out keeping the atmosphere on the brighter side of moody. The Purple mix is a very patient record that will suit early warm up play on the cooler progressive dancefloors out there. A release that will satisfy the purists as much as anything else we have heard this year. Take the time to check this out properly as you won’t be disappointed.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Oliver Moldan & Isma Ae
‘FiveFiveZero’ (HOPE)
Quite simply set to be the record of the summer with it's soaring Moroder style line that growls and grooves across the beats rising to meet a great warm string line that neither trances out nor washes down the downright reckless no nonsense danceability of this record. Electro House merchants Kaiser Souzai deliver a surprising mix pulling all the elements apart and creating something that cuts an edge but also sounds strangely reminiscent. A proper good release!
M8/M8 (Standby)

 RND
‘Mysterious World’ (IMAGIMOCEAN)
So much amazing music around right now and this certainly fits that description. The truly rocking Air Guitar Mix by name sounds like its not one to be taken very seriously but make no mistake this is worthy of main room peak time play. The Blue Room Project Mix is a more pedestrian breakbeat version with not nearly as much energy so its hard to get too excited about by comparison, but if kept well away from the Air Guitar Mix, it’s a fine track also.
M6/M8 (Standby)

D:Fuse & Hiratzka
‘Massif’ (LOS ANGELES)
The initial inspection of this does not immediately grab the attention but wait for the bassline to drop and you will see what this is really all about. Euphoric synth riffs give a fresh sounding outcome to a very well programmed Original mix. Amazingly perhaps bettering this, the Extended Mix is a sure crowd-pleaser also with a slamming bassline that will slot in very nicely with other production sounds that are circulating right now. Two great tracks making this a release that is unmissable.
M7/M8 (Standby)

N-Drew
‘Serenity’ (COMPOSURE)
Our pick of this month’s new prog-breaks offerings from a label we can rely on to always deliver the quality. The Original mix gives us a piece of main room euphoria with breaks percussion that delivers real energy and power. The Breaks mix on the B side is a lighter offering of more melodic focus that will be perhaps less useful for club play but compliments the original nicely with some great key changes and rounding off a very solid release. Musically certainly the stronger of the two mixes but each serves its own purpose. Good work.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Blatta & Inesha Meet Wiesel
Do It At The Peep Show (HELL YEAH)
Sicilian duo Blatta & Inesha are tearing it up right now on the techno // funk // electro dance floors with their own unique fusion of sounds. Their original mix is all of those things and a killer for the more pumping underground floors, but it’s to the remixes that we head for out hit. First up Alex Dolby teams with Maskio for their interpretation. The bassline and hooks are true to the original but it’s a more techno influenced industrial sounding peak time monster as an end result. On a contrast to this is the remix from Golde-Lox, a hot new UK act we have reviewed in previous months. Much like the UK ’s Four Twenty label, their style is minimal but maintaining the funk that’s so vital and the outstanding feature from the original.
M6/M8 (Standby)

Alexander Popov
‘Hypnotize’ (SWORDTAIL)
A genuinely unique production and an equally impressive range of mixes that will delight any prog-house follower. The Original mix really has it all and many of you won’t need to look any further than that, with excellent bassline movement and complimentary pumping strings that fuel the energy of the track. However, turn to any one of the Lo Tide, Jim Siver, or Blue Room Project mixes and you can’t help but feel that this is one of the best value releases around for some time. The remixes all lean away from the original’s vocal and melodic base but pure creativity and experimentation somehow morphs a range of sounds together and comes together into a range of different outcomes to a fascinating record. Stunning.

JULY 2007

Pole Folder
‘Buenos Aires EP’ (HOPE)
Belgian wonder kid Franquet Benoit does it again with two slices of nightlife culture based on numerous experiences in Argentina 's boogie capital Buenos Aires . Side A (if there is such a thing still) is the pumping peak time track Bokoto 10PM, which is a driving piece of tough house that builds over swirling synth riffs, filtered sweeps and a slice of short female vocal. The flip is more suited to that part of the night/morning when small waves of synths and sparkling guitar lines are you can take and when you're hoping gravity will continue to do its sterling work and keep your feet glued to the floor as your head continues to hit the ceiling.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Lokitas
‘Magenta’ (PITCH MUSIC PUBLISHING)
A special release that displays true production class and depth beyond what is immediately apparent on first listen. The Original Mix is a deep and patient progressive breaks track with a sweet bassline and immense atmospheric stabs and vocal treatments that consume the listener into a totally different world…The use of a live guitar takes the record a stage further and makes this a record of true listening pleasure rather than a dance track. The Vert Tree mix shows further creative talent which has a feel of more minimal Marshall Jefferson sounds which for pure originality and audible enjoyment male this one of the top tracks to hunt down right now. Quirky and intelligent.

Adam K & Dataworx
‘Surface’ (DATAWORX DIGITAL)
The field of Digital labels out there continues to strengthen and this release is yet another fine example of the quality coming through of late. Possessing the production qualities and club arrangement of some of the biggest progressive house tracks around, the Original Mix is of anthemic scale and screams out for the kind of attention that a big vocal would bring to this record. Perhaps with even more potential is the awesome Reverse Logic Mix on the flip, which has a perfect blend of housey bassline and progressive build that will bring lots of attention to these producers. A top notch release and we can’t wait to hear more releases from this label. M7/M8 (Standby)

 Goldie-Lox
‘Foreign Girls’ (SALACIOUS)
Let us make it clear from the start - this is absolutely top class! Its simple, you must go buy this as it will be one of the underground tunes of this summer! The balance of the mixes is perfect and a compliment to the A&R efforts behind this release. The Original with its deep, almost industrial style bass lines and haunting rhythms is for your progressive and tech house heads. Spektre’s Mix covers your minimal and minimal techno bods, with probably our choice mix being State Of Existence, with its more distinct synth riffs and pad sounds of the sort that your cooler house DJ’s will lap up. Seriously, if this doesn’t smash it this summer then I’m a little green fairy!

16 Bit Lolitas
‘Bits & Pieces Volume #1’ (BITS & PIECES)
If you read our reviews regularly you will know of this Dutch super duo as they have featured on a number of killer remixes over the last year. Having waited patiently we feel that 2007 will be the year they find another gear, and it starts here, with the launch of their own digital label BITS & PIECES. Four tracks on this EP, starting with our favourite Good Voodoo. Feel good house music with subtle layers of dynamic riffs that will cross all boundaries of house music genres. Goodbye Pluto V2, which notably features on Hernan Cattiness latest Sequential Renaissance comp, is an incredible track blending light, atmospheric keys with heavy weight hooks and bass lines that build into a perfect frenzy for a peak dance floor. Goodbye Pluto V1 offers an altogether more funky experience, whilst Anonymous But Hypnotic shows us the more underground and abstract side to this multi talented act. Note! Its all about the groove in every track, what ever genre they suit. Doesn’t get much better than this!

Jay Lumen
‘ Midnight Express’ (WHOOP)
Sensational track from a label that can always be trusted to get it right every time without fail. In fact the three mixes here are each very different to one another but with one uniting Jean Michel Jarre style arpeggio synth line that sweeps you up inside the track in a 6am “don’t even think about going home yet” kind of way. The Plasticated Express vs Human II Human mix is a reworking of the supplied Original mix with an up to date progressive sound that really comes together and makes the most of the components of this release. Marginally more accessible to a broader range of DJ’s is the Andro Dub which remains true to the original riff still but with a very current sounding fat electro house bassline, delivering the complete punch of this track and complimenting the melodies throughout.

Ilani & Tripo
‘Life Underneath’ / ‘Moon Stones’ (TURTLE TAP)
Launching this new label and we like the sound of what Turtle Tap has to offer if this is anything to go by. The deep qualities of ‘Moon Stones’ with musical feelgood vibes and a bassline that keeps the track from drifting offtrack too far make for perfect deep house sets/ warm up use. ‘Life Underneath’ is certainly the more lively of the two tracks with trance influences from the synth sounds to the delays - but not a cheesy riff in sight thankfully. A very fresh new sound here and from this fine start we hope to hear a lot more along these lines. M7/M8 (Standby)

JUNE 2007

Trentemoller & Buda
‘Gamma’ (KICKIN)
Having received so much praise as a producer during the last couple of years it’s very easy to expect a little too much from Trentmoller when new material comes along as its rarely a disappointment. Absolutely no reason to worry here as this is yet again one of the most slamming pieces of Trentmoller-tech we’ve heard yet. Another stand-out track from an out-standing pioneer of underground dance music. We plan to play this loud, lots of times and generally in cool dark clubs for much of the year!
M8/M8 (Standby)

Magik Johnson
‘Eastern Lights’ (SAVED)
Mr Johnson has a real history in dance music, based out of Manchester he was a core part in the Hacienda hay days, where he was a DJ alongside the likes of Graham Park. Always pushing the underground styles has resulted in numerous monikers and releases on labels like Twisted, Paper, NRK and now Nic Fanciulli’s Saved. The Original mix being a nudge above minimal house, with elements suited for the more progressive floors. Remix from Ran Shani takes a more twisted and electro ‘tinged’ edge, but I feel loses it’s way a little. Generally quality underground house music.
M6/M8 (Standby)

Slytek
‘Calyx’ (STANDBY)
Something of an anthem in our hands here and just in time for the summer months of sunshine clubbing. This piece if classy progressive house has a refreshing melody and really subtle uplifting progression that oozes energy that grows every time you hear this. Complimenting this alongside the original sits the Neon Skin Remix which carves out the lush melody of the original and restructures the vibe around softer percussion and more of a warm up sound than the buzzing energy of the original. Still fresh to the scene, Slytek has established a sought-after international sound that works just about anywhere.

Opus Ink
‘Darnkroomboot’ / ‘Resonator 404’ (SAW RECORDINGS)
Opus Ink is the moniker for a collective made up of Satoshi Tomiie, Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito. Coming out through Satoshi’s SAW Recordings Darkroomboot is, well, quite literally that. The deepest, darkest of glitched-out prog will really take you into a dark hole!! Sasse Elkatronix has been bought in on a remix to lift the elements to a more accessible dance floor track, and one that will suit the more UK & European minimal floors. Also on this EP is the very good Resonator 404, with its nod toward synths and acid grooves of tracks from the past yet worthy of a place on the prog and minimal floors of today. A strong outlet for these guys to show us their more underground side.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Tannen
‘The Blackout’ (HOPE)
Two totally contrasting mixes here on the latest output from Hope. The original is a big room affair, punctuated by eighties synth lines and quite close to a typical Eric Prydz fat sound yet somehow a little cooler and more direct. Definitely something to suit current cooler dancefloors with that retro synth feel. Tribehouse ( Germany ) regular Oli Moldan delivers a mix warm funky ripped back house music that has been on Digweed's playlist since before Christmas so as you would expect it’s a top notch track and highly recommended purchase. M8/M8 (Standby)

Principato & Dariush
‘Key of Paradise ’ (TIP FIFTH)
A slow burner this one - the Original mix has finally grown on us since the first few listens having failed to initially grab our attention. Not the most up to date in terms of progressive programming but it has the necessary driving percussion to be a solid performer in any situation at least. It’s the Impact Mix on the flip offers something a bit more up to date though with the current essential clean fat bassline and fresher sounding synth details – so much more to sit up and take notice of. A lush string breakdown adds greatly to the musical content and manages not to sound too over-dramatic. A fine release.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Dataworx
‘What The World Wants’ (DATAWORX)
Our most rocking tune of this month without a doubt (if not the year) with every big room component that you can imagine, sounding something like the tougher end of Chemical Brothers’ productions. A very creative vocal which sounds cool but sensibly the package comes with a no-vox instrumental mix for those who don’t warm to it as much as we have. Only set for digital release so don’t bother at your local record shop – but well worth checking out at any of the main download stores.

May 2007:

Key900
‘Texx’ (TON RECORDS)
Top notch deep, dirty and techy output here from Key900 making up Ton Record’s ninth release. The Original mix is a tribute to 80’s and 90’s tech house and although the sounds themselves are a little date it’s a fun and bouncy production that would work fine nowadays for sure. Key900’s own remix is the real treat with a higher level of production while staying true in character to the original. The beauty of this sort of track is that it can fit in with just about any style of set with a true merge of influences and all the necessary club programming to make any dancefloor respond favourably.

Blue Foundation
‘Sweep’ (RENAISSANCE)
Well known in their native Denmark for their unique pop tinged electro funk, and having supported the likes of Faithless & Gnarls Barkley and performed on some of Europe’s top festivals including their native Roskilde, it was no surprise to find even Hollywood picking up on this finest slice of Danish export – namely in the shape Michael Maan who used the original Sweep on ‘Miami Vice’. Well, there’s some background for you(!), now onto the club release, and Renaissance have brought in two quality remixers for the job. First is fellow Dane Mikkel, who delivers a beautiful & emotive mix, one for the more subtle sets. The talents of the 16 Bit Lolitas are again exposed to add some greater dance floor appeal and they do this with an excellent take on electro / tech house sounds. A tricky vocal to work with, but they have lifted it from its deeper beginnings to a real dance floor killer.

Chiba Unit vs David Phillips
Unforgettable Time (OMNIS)
Strong release here with a really interesting range of mixes with something for everyone. Firstly the Chadwick Strange mix is an awesome opener with screaming lead synths and powerful bass. Should definitely make most people sit up and take notice! The Desert Dwellers mix is quite a deep and vibey piece with trance gated synths, doing everything they can to avoid sounding trancey(!) Next up we have a totally energised mix from Mikel Curcio is altogether more noisy and electro-fuelled and much more suited to peak time club play. It’s the Nino Anthony mix here that is a welcome surprise on this package as it takes everything to the next level with a really fresh progressive tribal edge – a real standout record that we can’t wait to play out.

Oliver Moldon presents Prawler
‘White Trash EP’ (AUDIO THERAPY)
German based Oliver is making a real hit on UK labels right now, with a track set for release on Hope in the coming months, and this release on Audio Therapy is a bargain of an ep – with four beasts to choose from! The first track titled ‘Stunning’ is quite that! A really interesting and unique blend of the minimal german sound, yet with a nod back to the more classic progressive days with some wonderful breakdowns and rising strings. A interesting fusion of styles, but one that works brilliantly. Lutzenkirchen’s remix tweaks and messes with this theory completely and heads for a real stomping acid / minimal fusion – its cooooool! Debbie Does Dishes & the Harada remix are deep, trippy dance floor tools, that lack the uniqueness of Stunning but will be useful to a more minimal house DJ. Good work!
M7/M8 (Standby)

Slam
‘Azure’ (SOMA)
Great to have this pair back as they are two of the true masters of production and killer DJ sets. ‘Azure’ is the first single from their forthcoming album (their fourth to date). Azure Pt 1 develops through a clever series of twisted melodies and percussive elements, all underpinned by a jacking bass line. Pt 2, keeps the same hook lines and melodies, yet in a more simplified and less twisted manner. Basslines interestingly interlock and create an intelligent and original sound. The more ‘musical’ of the mixes. Great work from the guys.

D.Ramirez feat Dimitry Bobrov
‘Pleasure Me’ (SLAVE)
HUGE HUGE HUGE!!!! After dominating clubland over the last twelve months with his remixes Mr Ramirez is spoiling us with his own productions and guess what… they’re just as good if not better. Known for his filthy phat basslines ‘Pleasure Me’ is no different, and suggestive vocals courtesy of Russian Dimitry Bobrov adds to the sleaze factor - this is hot. All the copycats should take note and give up now! On the B-side a remix from fellow Sheffield lad Leiam Sullivan turning the original into a dark deep broody techno record that will be belted out by the uber cool at DC10 & Cocoon this summer no doubt. Watch out for more material like this featured on the D.Ramirez ‘Sessions’ album, forthcoming on Ministry Of Sound.

DJ Style vs LadyLife
Lifestyle (GLOBAL RITMICO)
Quite a simple sounding track in original form but with some clonking percussion and big room sounds that sound surprisingly impressive on a loud system. While the Original mix tries its best to be tribal in style, it’s the excellent David Phillips Mix on the flip side that successfully establishes a very cool tribal atmosphere with excellent production and very subtle acid-303 usage and the necessary noisy bits to keep things alive. Well worth checking out.

April 2007:

Glockenspiel feat Oxana
‘Pick Me Up’ (MOON TRIBAL)
The Club Dub is of main interest here – its a crunchy screaming progressive track with bold lead synth and bassline delivering true club satisfaction. Lush techy influences add to the vibrancy of this awesome production and thankfully with no real Glockenspiels audible throughout we avoid anything unnecessarily cheesy here. Equally polished is the Original Mix although on a deep vocal house vibe which, although minimal electronic music by production will sound a little bit soft and soulful to most progressive house followers. Al class package all round though and the Dub alone more than meets our requirements.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Noel Sanger
‘Nothing’ (CURVVE)
We’re a big fan of Noel Sanger’s sound and here this latest release on Curvve really impresses in all the right ways. The honest prog-trance skills of Kenneth Thomas with the remix responsibilities here makes for an all-out trancey result but with the sweet uplifting proggy musicality that will capture the mind of anyone who hears this. A strong vocal really helps to pull the whole thing together but a Dub mix is included in the package which always makes good sense. Definitely worth a listen for anyone who follows a more uplifting spirit.
M7/M8 (Standby)

Facu Mohrr
‘Aime Paine’ (BELLARINE)
A truly exciting package of progressive delights here with an impressive bunch of mixes all offering a worthwhile variation on the Original – it’s hard to know where to start. For us, it’s Gabe de Wielen who offers one of the outstanding remixes of the package with strong vibrant lead synths and string production. The Hernan Paredes remix is a full on progressive stormer and really brings out the energy of the record. The package includes too many variations to mention here but the Andy EF Minimalism mix is worthy of a special mention which grabbed our interest with cool and patient progressions and anthemic vibe. Even chillout downtempo mix is included here. Something for everyone.

Blue Fountain
‘Sweep’ (RENAISSANCE)
Danish based Mikkel are the first to take hold of this new addition to the Renaissance catalogue turning in a deep, bass-heavy & minimal style mix which sits very well across most European clubs right now. Already picked up by Nick Warren to feature on his latest Global Underground (Paris). In fact, another act to feature on Warren ’s compilation, and favourite producers of ours right now, Dutch based 16 Bit Lolitas are also on remix duty here. These guys take the track to another level bringing in huge riffs and synth chords, elavating the vocals from a more melodic original production into a main room track – not an easy thing to do, but 16 Bit Lolitas have just got it nailed right now! Neat work from Renaissance to get these remixers at a time when they are very much on the up. A rock solid release.

16 Bit Lolitas
‘Non Verbal Language’ / ‘Back To One’ (HOPE)
The 16 bits start their ascension proper with these two tracks on the revamped Hope. We introduce this double A release with ‘Non Verbal Language’, including a remix from Loafer. Rare as it is to get a remix as good as the original here it is achieved with both mixes hitting the big numbers. The original is slightly more reserved and is likely to cross over to the housier heads reading this page. It's crisp, clean and beautifully produced. The remix opens up the throttle that tiny bit more, just squeezing a little more life out of it and taking into bumpier and darker terrain. ‘Back To One’ is more dreamy and acts as a bridge between the two. We are intrigued with what these guys have to offer and this is well worth checking out.

Tarot feat Kasyer E Ryan
‘Conscious’ / ‘Slow But Sure’ (KNOB)
Two tracks that both stood out on first impact but failed to really deliver on full inspection. ‘Conscious’ is unfortunately let down but a female vocal that lacks any credibility but otherwise is a conventional progressive house record that would work fine in most places. ‘Slow But Sure’ is, as the name would suggest, a bit more unambitious and although it won’t bring smiles to faces, it’s a solid club track that we are sure will gather a degree of keen support.

Wavepilots
‘Big Waves E.P.’ (PURE SUBSTANCE DIGITAL)
Very cool and quirky mix of tracks on this digital-only release. First up is ‘Dolphins Play’ which is a contemporary club track worthy of play from any DJ. Rock solid percussion and some cool atmospherics add to the effectiveness of this one. ‘Daily Dial Up’ is the quirkiest of the tracks here, showing that adding loads of variation into a record can create excellent new levels of interest – you have to check this one. ‘Bounty Hunter’ also comes as art of this release and would suit warm up environments better than the other tracks provided on this release. For a digital-only release this really sets a very high standard to match. Excellent.

Slytek
‘Delirious’ (STANDBY RECORDS)
A name which has got off to a flying start to '07 with huge support across the house music scene for the recently released 'Body Heat', Slytek here takes things a step even further here showing true versatility to add to already proven ability. ‘Delirious’ comes here in two forms, the Original Mix, which follows on nicely from previous releases and very much for the uplifting end of progressive tastes (think along the lines of Eric Pyrdz meets Chicane) with euphoric builds and driving beats. An awesome production full of energy, proven club ingredients and anthemic feel. On the flip, Slytek’s own PressureFunk Mix takes a very different approach and delivers a top notch remix for the funkier house arena extending the package to a much broader audience. Two genres, and two rock-solid pieces of music that will without doubt go down a storm.

You may remember his successful Duty Free label for its tuff, techy and trancey dance music in the late 90’s early 00’s and this new label picks up and moves things forward from there. The lead track ‘Cario’ is a driving peak time monster, with some really crisp and punchy beats that set a solid framework to the track. Move away now if your not a fan of ‘hand in the air moments’ for the main synth line is like a blast from the past and is in stark contrast to the deeper beats that hold the track together, and yet it does work! For you cooler heads ‘Gyrostat’ is a glitchy, twisted house track at home in any cool underground DJ set. Plenty of pace and pounding beats, with a small nod towards techno.

‘Funk You’ (MUZIK X PRESS)
Very accessible housey progressive with a funky theme throughout as the name would suggest. In Original Mix form, there’s not too much to get excited about to be honest but the Arial Perazolli Mix brings the best out in this release with a more current sounding interpretation and a classic house bassline with the highlight being an excellent funky break and build – the kind of thing that really refreshes a busy dancefloor and drives things forward. Very much a club track rather than having a great deal of music appeal but we have to admit that this remix works very well.

Dakasound
‘Trip to Bhutan ’ / ‘Nirvana’ (TRIBAL ROOM)
Quite a dark sounding release by our usual standards but there’s an originality here that brings this tribal influenced release to our attention. ‘Nirvana’ is an interesting deep journey with an array of atmospheric creepiness to scare anyone in a big dark smokey club, but with some interesting ‘world music’ sounds of instruments we don’t even know the name of, it charms throughout. ‘Trip to Bhutan ’ is similarly positioned but with more solid percussion and tribal rhythms. Worth checking out if you are into the deeper depths of tribal sounds.

Shiloh
‘Cafe del Mariachi’ (HOPE)
Baroque's bad boys, Shiloh , come full tilt on this guest appearance for Hope Recordings. The Original Mix builds energetically around what can only be described as a distant twisted fairground organ, glacial melodies and a fast ping-ponging rubber bassline (no seriously!) Challenging to describe on paper it may be, but it’s impossible to stand still to. Nick Warren who is quickly making a name for himself for his solo projects whilst Way Out West are on hiatus has managed to take out a lot of the light and deliver a proper dark twitching stripped back monster here for his excellent remix. An excellent forward-thinking release.

‘Forever’ (1SHOT)
Solid progressive release with a superb bunch of mixes. It borders on quite a commercial sounding release but you have to forgive this every now and then – we skipped past the radio edit(!) The remix from Everyday Downers & Vasilos was the first one to grab our attention with it’s subtle progressions and trancier uplifting musicality – certainly the highlight of this release. With a remix from Jerome Robins and Brad Copeland also on the package you know you are in for something special, really making the most of the full ‘Forever’ female vocal, but the vocal itself lacks sincerity and anything truly memorable so we doubt this will really be one that people remember for years to come, but well worth checking out.

‘Yeah’/’Modulate’ (SAVED)
Maybe it’s the time of year, but nostalgia seems to be in the air with productions of late and Yeah fits is one that fit’s that vibe. With a jumped-up bassline and snappy vocal stabs there is a definite vibe of early warehouse party music of the 90’s, all be it now wrapped up in a blanket of tight and crisp productions (no jumping or scratching of needles on this one!) Jim pster’s remix is as fantastic as everything else he is turning out right now and drags us kicking and screaming back into today’s clubs with a techno infused ‘tool’ that’s definitely one for us DJ’s to get all hot over! Jimpster stealing the show yet again. Respect.

‘Crop Duster’ (RENAISSANCE)
Productions from this rising star based out of Israel are in high demand right now from all the right types. Mark Knight, Nic Fanciulli, Hernan Cattaneo and Satoshi Tom mie can all be counted as taste makers on this latest production ‘Crop Duster’ which is a real dance floor hit. Fresh sounding, yet with a hypnotic groove akin to classics like French Kiss, this is a classy piece of main room fodder. On the flip, the ‘Really Really Freaky Twisted Mix is’ … well… just that. Fractured beats and minimal production qualities add a wonderful contrast to the main mix and makes sure there is something here for everyone to grab hold of. A very strong release from the Renaissance label.

‘Body Heat’ (STANDBY)
Some seriously strong output from Slytek in recent months and this latest release could be the one that broadens the reputation across genres. In Original Mix form, ‘Body Heat’ has a seductive groove and an equally addictive melody that you just don’t want to stop once it gets in your head. The strength of the bassline particularly warms to just about any occasion and provides the feelgood element that carries the track all the way through. Hard to match, the Hot Flush Mix takes the track to a different level and will meet the requirements of just about any edgy house and prog DJ with bright lead synths and rock solid percussion programming. It’s called ‘Body Heat’ – and it’s HOT.

‘One and Only’ (HOPE)
After the sad demise of distributors, Intergroove, I wasn't sure if this jewel would see the light of day but it seems Amato have picked up where they left off and this track is now heading for a proper release with a brand new Dave Seaman/Group Therapy Mix. Produced in conjunction with the 16bit Lolitas it's a chugging driving atmospheric beast with a hooky (but not cheesy) female vocal and also comes with a straight instrumental dub version for the more building sets. The GT mix takes it into bouncier peak time territory. Look out for Jim my’s recent BALANCE compilation, and Nick ’s latest forthcoming Global Underground mix for more hot new bits & pieces.

‘Cant Stop’ (SAVED)
In case you weren’t aware SAVED is Nic Fanciulli’s label, and so you know you’re in for some edgy, upfront material that is true to the real meaning of house music. ‘Can’t Stop’ is a warm, groovy production, with a nod towards the NYC style house which has been somewhat lost in the noodle of minimal and electro recently. DJinxx’s remix brings us very much to the sound of today with a dark and edgy electro fused rendition. All in all a worthwhile set of tunes you should be looking out for.

‘Tok’ (XETON)
Cool selection of styles here covering 3 distinctly different bases of progressive. The Original Mix is a breaks rhythm with an arpeggio synth bassline in the style of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ – this sound will never fail to work! With an excellent selection of bleeps and drops it works a treat. Dom Kane’s remix is another different take on things, with a much housier feel and moodier bassline. The Mental Project mix is the one that stands out for us with a very fresh electro house range of sounds, making for a very reliable club track and useful on all sorts of occasions. Really impressed with the different vibes here in each of the mixes provided and definitely worth getting hold of a copy.

‘Winter’ (CO2 AMSTERDAM )
Delightful, hypnotic and intriguing. This release is all about one big looping lead synth line that has a warm endearing quality that sucks you in and is very hard to leave. Both the original and DnC Groove mixes are very similar with the latter adding a few extra percussive delights along with a fatter bassline sound. It’s a very laidback and chilled experience but it’s somehow hard to see this not working mid-set as it’s all to easy to be consumed by the enchanting vibe of this track.

’63 Model Subjects’ (COMPOSURE)
A truly awesome house groove here with Paul Kwitek on remix duty polishing this release into something very special. A stunning deep house interpretation sensibly titled the ‘Deep Mix’ has top production quality all over it. But if that was not enough, his Sunny Day mix shows true percussive production genius. Like some of Deep Dish’s earlier work, this locks you into the most infectious of grooves and spins you around in a progressive house frenzy. We have totally gone for this track and it’s the kind of record that will remain in the box for many years. Stunning.

‘Origins’ (NIGHTSHADE MUSIC)

Certainly our pick of the month from the deeper side of progressive, with true quirky and fresh warmup atmosphere that will get just about anybody shaking their stuff to the groove. Words can’t explain how truly good the production of this sounds, with true depth and interest in every sound used here - a fine example to all. This is the first release from Nightshade and hope to hear a lots more along these lines throughout ‘07. Don’t miss this one.

‘Special Kind of Love’ (BLOW MEDIA)
Wicked 80’s theme throughout this storming prog-houser and the currently essential dose of acid-synths. In Instrumental form this record works a treat and we’ve already seen what this can do to a dancefloor. The original mix has the added bonus of cute female spoken vocals that sit really well with the whole production and add to the interest. There’s nothing hugely original here, but it all fits together perfectly and with it’s conventional club production will sound great just about anywhere. Another high quality release from the impressive Blow Media.

‘Inventiveness Vibration’ / ‘Running After Time’ (HUNYA MUNYA)
An honest example of proven producers showing their talents and reliably delivering the goods. The two faces of progressive are covered with ‘Inventiveness Vibration’ first up and taking a safe approach to solid feelgood euphoric progressive, with all the uplifting synths and hands in the air moments anyone could need. On the flip, ‘Running After Time’ caters for the more current sounding tastes, with a minimal glitchy pattern and scratchy distorted hits – we’d probably side with the A-side but this is an altogether much more current sounding result so probably the one that will pick up the greatest interest.

‘Entropy’ (STANDBY)
Firmly now on the map, Greek producer Dino Christophilopilous has set himself up for big things reaching far beyond his homeland in 2007 having picked up broad praise for his first releases as Slytek. The Original Mix of ‘Entropy’ takes a firm foundation of club drum programming, intelligent arrangement and some cute pop synths with a hint of Mylo simplicity – certainly a very accessible track for all house music lovers and has all the necessary fresh sounds and other quirks. For the cooler crowd, check out the AudioCubist Mix with it’s trashier electro tinges, twisted effects and deep tech synth frenzies, again using the same bassline but presenting an altogether edgier result. Overall - we think this is rather good.

‘Morning Groove’ / ‘Fucking Rox’ (BRALLI)
Two beautiful and deep progressive journeys courtesy of Bralli Records that you will want to hear again and again. Such a wide range of sounds across this release and all with timeless appeal, despite being not exactly fresh or original. You just have to listen to these and you feel a summer after-hours vibe that takes you mind away and makes you totally forget we are in deepest winter right now – well for a few minutes at least! Something here for anyone with good taste and will certainly satisfy the purists out there. M8/M8 (Standby)

‘A Good Book’ (2600 RECORDS)
We weren’t immediately excited by the title of this latest EP release from 2600, but on closer inspection this is certainly worthy of a few lines in M8 this month. 3 tracks on the release, with ‘A Good Book’ not much more interesting than the name itself, but a solid houser with techy atmosperics that keep things rolling along in fine style. ‘Release’ is along a similar housey tip and although it has the basics of a catchy groovy bassline, it does not quite pull it off. Highlight of this release is a very subtle and low key track called ‘Take Your Time’ which could not be more sleepy and dreamy if it tried, but it rounds off a varied package of tracks well and has a certain charm of its own.

‘Sunbaked’ (MONAD)
Sensational release here, sit up and take note of this one for sure! Some delightful production techniques and original ideas that sound so fresh and effective. That combined with genuine ability to create a hugely infectious groove in Original mix form, makes for some seriously good music. Remixes include an Andi & Pangea mix along with our fave from Johan Chatkowski who has put together something that’s both beautiful and dirty (always the ideal combination that everyone hopes for!). If there’s just one piece of music you look to acquire this month then you know exactly what to look for.

‘Seconds’ (KUTIKULA)
A fascinating release this one that we are still trying to get used to but worth a big mention for musicality. A full vocal, male and beautiful female vocals singing together and a very unconventional dance music arrangement that will baffle most dj’s and club-goers but musically works amazingly well and after a few listens starts to really impress once familiar with this approach. Possibly the type of track that could really catch on with the right remix and has big potential. That’s not to say this is not a great remix though and any vocal progressive lover will take huge interest in this. Big thumbs up from us and top marks.

Chris Lake vs Trophy Twins
‘Babaloo // Check This’ (POP POP)
Babaloo is a fun jacking house track, but its that bit tougher than most standard ‘house’ records so works well in amongst an electro or as a nice refresher in a prog set. Big bass lines and use of a huge synth sound give this one real power. The most notable point is the great party vocal ‘white people turn up the treble, black people turn up the bass’, used in classic Ibizan house tracks in years gone by and provides a large degree of familiarity. These producers have made a great combination and a track that will fit perfect in house / tech / electro / progressive sets. LARGE

Minilogue
‘Out of The Curious’ (SILVER PLANET)
Another new home for a Minilogue track, this time with the more traditionally progressive and electro label that is Silver Planet which has managed to cleverly diversify into some very fresh sounding productions from new artists over the last year. An excellent beginning to this record, building from a nice minimal groove with a great bass line. The use of expensive sounding synths and 303 style sounds lead into a breakdown where the introduction of a voice sound effect and a bunch of wicked glitchy bits propel you into a frenzy of sound. Great way to start a set and one of the best Minilogue releases to date.

‘Random Love’ (CONTRAST)
The Original Mix is a conventional progressive houser that could have been any time in the last 10 years in terms of production and arrangement but a few subtle sounds give this a few attractive features that most old-school prog lovers will find appealing. There’s not a huge amount to get excited about here and the Breaks Mix for example is very much a straightforward breaks version with little difference other than that the percussion and the result is a very similar mood. Perhaps not enough to engage the fresh progressive ears of today.

Planet Boelex
‘Diciassette Ani’ (XAKK)
Broken chilled progressive with an incredibly fresh sound to it. It’s not often that we don’t know how to pronounce neither the artist not the title, and to be honest we’re not too comfortable with how you say the label name either! Not put off by that though, the Bjorn Fogelberg mix is a worthy melodic charmer that sweeps you away in euphoria like a chilled trance record. The Alternative Take mix is the cooler and more quirky track with glitchy percussion and enchanting spoken voices. This release is probably too laidback for most dancefloors but definitely worth a listen if you are looking for something a little different with timeless qualities and a fresh vibe. Perhaps bring this issue of M8 mag with you to your local record shop and point to this review – rather than trying to pronounce the name!

‘Holding’ (FOUR:TWENTY)
Alex or ‘Metric’ as you may know him from his breaks persona has previously released some club monsters on labels like Lot49 (Hell Yeah and Stale). Now signed to Four:Twenty, this release by the name of ‘Holding' is a completely different beast that sits perfectly on this blossoming UK tech house / techno label. The Original mix is a subtle and melodic piece building around a warm and energising bass line, upon which are some of the deepest pads and synth riffs I’ve heard throughout 2006. At first you think ‘nice’, second you think ‘wooow’, third time it’s almost religion! On the flip is Swiss-based Dani Koenig (new label signing) who delivers a much darker and edgier mix whilst retaining the characteristics of the main mix. Hot property from Four:Twenty.

Mad Bojo (ADJUST)
Two fine producers unite and here we have an excellent deep and moody track courtesy of Danny Graham’s Mix with bold and noisy synths and one seriously heavy bassline. These kind of tracks are so infectious throughout the clubscene and are every DJ’s friend - get this one out, play loud and just see what happens! On the flip, the The Pushers deal us a slightly softer interpretation with a rolling bassline and a more melodic progressive journey that is more suited to early warm up moods. Two excellent tracks here with Danny Graham onto a winner with his very current sounding version that will gather strong support in clubland.

So Long (GU)
The label which still brings you some of the hottest underground mixes care of its Global Underground mix series is fast become a source for quality underground singles as well. The original mix of So Long is more for the leftfield amongst you, and for us its certainly on the mp3 player but not something to play out. A club targeted mix from Mashtronic is the lead one for us with its driving slightly trancey beats (Gabriel & Dresden style). A Dub version is also provided which always comes in useful. Electro heads go straight for the Andrew Kelly remix which covers off another angle really well and also comes with a dub. A solid and versatile package. Expect to see on a comp near you soon!

Metanoia / Open Your Eyes (CHRISTIAN RECORDS)
This months techier selection from an artist that has raised one or two eyebrows in recent months. Unfortunately nowhere near as interesting musically or technically as his other recent efforts, but Open Your Eyes has plenty that will appear to the more techno-based DJs. Detroit style key stabs throughout produce a traditional tech-theme but thats about it. Metanoia is too dark and deep for us but it has a more housey feel that might work better for some. We cant feel that this is going to get anybody too excited but its more solid output from a producer gathering a good reputation for himself.

He Doesnt Love You (TOMMY BOY)
USA based label Tommy Boy have always had a distinct sound with artists like Murk championing the tuff, techy USA style house music and this new track sits right alongside them. A swiftly building percussive section feeds into the main looped vocal before quickly dropping into a breakdown of simple beats and then the track really gets going. The vocal is full and delivered by a husky female, (Sarah well assume)! In truth the vocals are not great and lyrics are obvious. Wed liked to have seen a dub of this remix as the music really builds well to a massive dance floor slammer so its a shame were just stuck with this full vocal mix. There is a remix from Hook N Slide but its a little lost between funky and electro house and the same issues with the vocal still exist.

Subliminal (WHITE RECORDINGS)
Excellent quality release from White again the Original Mix here is one of tribal housey genius with effective breakdowns and slamming percussion. Its all quite dark and deep but has such a swinging groove that any club will get on this. The remix from Mikel Curcio adds a really fat bassline synth which has been something of a trend over recent months. It works brilliantly though and the simplicity of this record is its best feature, with percussion progressions bold and well timed and all the right effects in the right places. Check out the cool snares love it!

Creatures Of Habit (REPUBLIC OF DESIRE)
Orbital fans listen up for this track as it has all the flavours of those psychedelic masters. Not house, not breaks, but a 4x4 bassline with tons of echoed effects that create a really unique, rolling, rampant foundation to the record. A spoken male vocal and the songs of birds add to the psychedelic feel and thinkness of synth layers and percussion build up making this suitable for the more forceful dance floors of today. Orbital styles brought up to date - We love it!

Rockstar / Tokyo (NEUROSCIENCE DEEP)
Brand new label and launching with something very original and creatively different this stands out for attention this month. Rockstar has an easy going melodic breaks feel and with its clean approach to electro sounds it all comes across very fresh. Tokyo is a housier track with similarly quirky electro synths throughout and an uplifting vibe that comes across really well and has real cross-genre appeal. Definitely leaves you wanting to hear more from Mark Bonk which must be a good thing. Check it out!

Shlomi Aber
Tel Aviv Garden (AUDIO THERAPY)
Awesome new discovery by Audio Therapy with remixes to come from Dave Seaman amongst others so keep a look out for those which will emerge in coming weeks. For now though here, just an original and a dub mix. The Original Mix is a peak time beast of rolling acid laced base line and effects. Building from the more minimal style the addition of a synthesized riff rapidly builds into a frenzy and is guaranteed to set floors alight. Its a BIG record. The remix is a marginally more subtle affair based around the more traditional house beat and claps that creates warmth about the track. This version has peaks and troughs as layers of percussion build before dropping into a breakdown, and out the other side with a kick. Started off loving the original but think the dub has the staying power!
